"Seasons 6-8 are not worth watching EVER. Anyone who prefers Sargent over York is NO BEWITCHED FAN. PERIOD.
Eww it makes me SICK"

I know this comment was made a year ago (exactly, oddly enough), but I'm watching Season 6 on DVD right now, so. . .

I was too young to watch Dick York's seasons when they were first-run. But j-u-u-s-s-st old enough to watch the Dick Sargent seasons that way. And so, like a person who hears a remake of a song before ever hearing the original, I prefer the 2nd Darrin. And I AM a true Bewitched fan.

Another reason is--though both actors resemble each other enough to be brothers--York always looked vaguely simian to me, while Sargent was odd looking, but kinda sexy. Though the sexual chemistry may have been there more with York, an actual attraction seemed more likely with Sargent.

So don't begrudge a person for liking an actor you're not fond of. We have our reasons.

Incidentally, while I love even the 8th season of the show (love the super-70s fashion and decor), the real "jump the shark" is the remaking of so many episodes. Other shows make it into 200+ episodes without resorting to remakes. It was just lazy.
The first time I saw 'Bewitched', I was fascinated with Liz&York's chemistry! They were getting along each other, and watching them kissing each other was so adorable to me. Sam was a wonderful witch who suits a smile and always care about her husband, child, and her relatives. I was so mad about this drama -I even hope that I could be such a woman like Sam when I grow up and get my household! It is true that York's Darrin sometimes(or many times) goes into so-called hysterics, but he still was likable because of York's exaggerate action, which amuses viewer very much. And he really loved Sam! I could say that from every episode they were together! I always laughed when Endora casted some spell on York's Darrin. His reaction and Endora's attitude were so attractive that even though I love York's Darrin very much, I always wished Endora to appear in Sam&Darrin's house and cast a spell on him at every episode! I was able to think that because I knew Sam will help him afterwards. I was just so sorry for York's retirement due to his terrible backache! I was very surprised and mourned for rest of his life being too poor that he had to part with his house! I heard that he once had a time when he couldn't buy a food for his family (I couldn't make sure if it is true). I wish he acted through 8 seasons as an affectionate Darrin. I felt like something very precious disappeared from this show when Dick York retired.
BEWITCHED ROCKS MY WORLD!!!!!!!!!! :)
Even as a small child, I never understood why Samantha was married to that hostile, pinched, sour-faced Darrin (Dick Sargent).

I totally sided with Endora and wished she'd make him vanish permanently.
part-2...flashrocketship again...when I was a small boy I truely was fooled by serena I thought another actress was playing serena not elizabeth montgomery... I did not see the split screen as a boy...she was such a good comedy actress !watch her beautifully green eyes in all her silly expressions...she can really move her face (unlike the botox masked actresses of today..)nicole kidman(i still hear her beautiful australian within her fake midwestern american ) sucked so bad in bewitched movie the whole movie remake was jumping the shark! why bother! hollywood movies should be boycotted when remakes are insulting to the classic show!(best remake ever made was all quiet on the western front...michael thomas walton's johnboy and ernest borgnine of mccale's navy)...one thing I must get off my chest...larry hagman on I dream of jeanie as astronaut tony nelson is the funniest and most priceless acting in t.v.land history...he puts me in tears and my sides hurt...laughing...i have all seasons on dvd...i watch bewitched for a show ...then an I dream of jeannie episode...huge truth I could never watch larry hagman for even 15min then or now as the evil j.r. oil tycoon on dallas...i have never even seen the dallas show...i loved athony nelson so much as a boy...my bubble astronaut idol of him remains untarnished...yes this is very unfair to larry hagman a great actor who should get to play many parts...i am very sorry but apollo era nasa is a very sacred boyhood memory being born in 1965 ...i got to stay home from school to watch all the moon landing...memories nostalgia from bewitched is sometives so powerfull...samantha has pompons acting like a cheerleader for some local politics in an early season episode...i remember my beautiful older sisters having their sexy cheerleader friends over after school...i remember as a football player in highschool flirting with cheerleaders...i remember at u.w.madison wildly screwing a blonde cheerleader who was drunk after a football game ...she looked like liz montgomery!
I remember the show very well from constant boyhood viewing I was born in 1965...i own it on dvd...when I saw it all again as an age 40+ guy...i was shocked by all the hard booze drinking huge bottles everywhere...but now strange... I do recall my mother preparing gin martinis for my father as soon as he walked inside the door after a hard days work at the bell system...i asked them for green olives...anyway what I now see is I find I am nearly always in complete agreement with andorra...(why not pop of to paris for lunch?) andorra actually is showing very very great moderation for a person of near unlimited power not to turn darin into a toad...and will tabitha's witchcraft education and training be retarded by dysfunctional control freak darin's orders both darin's(good actors)were selfish jerks to his trophy wife...she was to obey darin's every order...i am a real man but it helps me fully realize what not to do as a husband...the show in a tiny way says to me this 1960's marriage will become a 1970's divorce!!! i'm pretty conservative but the show covertly teachs me a common sense mini-feminist message that the suburban housewife could be in a sort of emotional gold cage gulag...enslaved to her husband's careerism...dinner parties in their own living room...darin's sin(under orders from larry) is that he takes the office nightly into his home...yes show is very very funny...but I know in my deepest guts samantha will someday divorce darin...i actually dated girls who are wiccans( mother nature goddess pagan psychic witchcraft...because I had learned to be tolerant of ancient religions) because of the show...when I watch the show I am romantically and erotically smitten by how beautiful and attractive and funny elizabeth montgomery is...we have her forever in t.v.land!
Regarding the 2 Darrins, I remember thinking in the early shows here'a woman who can have any man in the world. She's beautiful, funny and a witch so why pick this mortal? Dick York's portrayal of Darrin showed you a man who was affectionate, loving and funny. Okay I can see why she loves him. But Dick Sargeant's portrayal made me think why is she with this guy!? He's no fun, angry all the time and kissed her liked he was kissing his grandmother. Dick York was the best.
And this episode of Tabitha counts as a reunion how? None of the actors on Tabitha were ever on Bewitched, so there was nobody to be "reunited" with. The appearances by George Tobias and Sandra Gould were more like simple guesting shots. The only reunion took place behind the scenes between them and William Asher.
There actually was something of a 'Bewitched" reunion...well, sort of.

The spin-off series "Tabitha" aired 13 episodes during Fall 1977. A fun show, not GREAT like the early years of "Bewitched", but fun nonetheless. The 12/17/77 episode featured George Tobias and Sandra Gould. Yup, Abner and Gladys came a-visiting. This episode was also directed by none other than William Asher! No kidding. Sam and Durwood are not there, but it is still nice to see how the grown up Tabitha interacts with the Kravitzs. Best of all, a long running storyline is finally tied up in a nifty unexpected way...by Abner Kravitz!

The closest they (kind of/sort of) came to a series finale...or at least tied up a prevalent loose end...and it was on a spin-off!
Eric,

Just to be accurate, this information was already noted by the poster named Erin on June 13 below.
For the record Elizabeth Montgomery was not the first choice to play Samantha, Tammy Grimes was the first choice and Dick Sargent was the first choice to play opposite of Tammy Grimes. Once Grimes turned down the role, Sargent was not the first choice to play opposite Elizabeth Montgomery
i wonder why elizabet Montgomery likes both darrin when the 2nd one was lousy.however when someone says the other one is better she'll defend the other one.for eg in the bewitched book one of the writers think sargent's darrin is a more calmer darrin but elizabeth denied it and said when darrin need to be short tempered Dick sargent compared equally with Dick york and refers to them as both being fantastic
yeah the show defimetly jumped with that idiot sargent
I think Bewitched should have ran for its 9th season (1972-1973) and had a proper conclusion. The last show episode 254 was a remake of an earlier episode so I feel we never had closure with this show... The 9th season would have brought closure and a sense of an ending. Too bad we will never see the episodes that were meant to be!
I grew -up watching 'Bewitched' and loved it when TVLand showed it about 3years ago eveyday.I taped many of the episodes and enjoyed them,I had never seen ANY of the 1st,2nd,3rd season episodes and they were a treat to watch and get familiar with. The problems that started to belagure the show was the recasting and the recycled storylines by the 6,7,and 8th years. First Irene Vernon was let go as 'Louise Tate' I was puzzled about that for years until recently I read that she was let go because she was friends with one of the writer/producers of the show who had left the series. Irene Vernon was classy, funny, and put Larry in his place whne he go out of line. Kasey Rogers was good in the part also. I developed a liking for her 'Louise' also. I felt that there could have been more done with the character as the series moved on when Ms. Rogers replaced Ms.Vernon in the part. There were times when 'Louise' appeared in seasons 6 and 7 and her part was nothing more than a 5 minute bit part in a particular episode. Gladys Kravitz first played by Alice Pearce was hiliarious then Sandra Gould
took over the part after Ms.Pearce died and I never quite accepted her portrayl. Sandra Gould was too loud, abravise, and young for the part. Aunt Clara played by Marion Lorne died and sensibly they didnot try to recast the part. They just never mentioned her again. Larry Tate became boring by seasons,5,6,7 all he did was say he had a million dollar account and threaten to fire Darrin when things went wrong. Then when Darrin saved his butt from disaster, suddenly Darrin became 'You son of a Gun'But Darrin was NEVER good enough to promote to a higher level position such as McMann,Tate, and Stephens or get a big raise or bonus for his efforts One good episode that everyone should see was when after he Darrin,Darrin decided to go into business for himself and was going to take over one of their biggest client. He had old Lary Boy sweating. Also Larry spent is other time just putting Louise down and calling her "OLD" Louise was by no means as old as he was and Larry should have been glad to have her. Who else would put up with him? and there was barely no mention of Larry and Louise son Jonathan. Jonathan appeared in about 3episodes and was never mentioned again afterwards.
...Agnes Moorehead was fabulous as Endora and contributed a great deal to the show's success she played off well with Liz Montgomery, Dick York,Marion Lorne,Maurice Evans(he should have been in more episodes)and Paul Lynde. Erin and Diane Murphy were very good as Tabitha. The recasting of Darrin's father Frank Stephens kind of threw me off a bit. Mabel Albertson as Phyllis Stephens was a bit overbearing at times, also I noticed that Tabitha never spent much time with her mortal grandmother as she did with Endora... Alice Ghostley as Esmeralda just didnot do it for me at. I wonder why they even brought her in as a Aunt Clara wannabe with her forgetting spells and all... Dick York vs. Dick Sargent. Unfortunately due to Dick York's back problems and addiction to pain killers he left the show and was replaced by Dick Sargent. Dick York at times was a bit controlling and neurotic when he didnot want Samantha to use witch craft in the earlier episodes but he has a gentle, loving, and sincerity in his portrayl of Darrin that Dick Sargent lacked when he took over the role. Dick Sargent's Darrin came acrossat times as being mean spirited, sarcastic, and just out of place. Dick Sargent was good in other televison shows that I saw him in but just wanot right as Darrin. This is what changed the chemistry of the show. Perhaps if Dick York had gone into rehab to kick his addiction to pain killers during the summer hiatus he could have come back and finished out the series. I read somewhere that he was heartbroken and felt that he let everyone down because he left the show. The addition of Adam near the last remaining years of the show was not too bad. It is just the the writers didnot develop his character fully but by that time the show was out of fresh ideas and on its last legs. I have good memories of 'Bewitched' and enjoy the episodes that I was able to tape and it will always remain a one fo a kind show.
