why the hell has nick at night not picked this up yet this show was awesome. never jumped.
I can't believe how many people don't think it jumped the shark. I love the show, but once they went to college and then Cory and Topanga got married, everything was crazy. Cory carved coconuts in the shapes of Mr. Feeny, Eric got cooked by cannibals in Hawaii, Cory and Topanga ran into a little kid who said, "I see dead people" and then came back as Cory's brother (mysteriously aged) in the final episode. Cory slips into an alternate universe. Great show when it was good, but ridiculous when it got bad.
Well, Alyssa Wright has been chased off; her man hating tripe has been exposed for the lunacy that it is. Good!

I'm surprised that the suits at ABC let Topanga blimp up as she did. I would have thought that they would have exerted more control. Does anyone have any insight into this? Was there a weight clause in her contract? As concious as most adolescents are about their bodies, I would have thought the network would have hounded her. It was actually a relief, given the anorexic fixation most shows demonstrate!
when you realized that Mr. Feeny was going to follow them to every level of education.
Personally, I started to tune out a little when Eric went from not that smart to insanely stupid. That was probably right around the time that they introduced Jack, though there were still times he was bearable after Jack. There was a good balance struck in the show up until that point, and then it just started to wacky. The Truman Show spoof is an example of one that I consider unbearable to watch.
I have always appreciated "voluptuous" women, so I liked it when Topanga porked up. Same thing with Kirsty Alley, Delta Burke, the girls on "Facts of Life" and Henrietta Hippo of "New Zoo Review" fame.
For me, it was the moment that Cory said he was in grade 11, when I could have sworn he was in grade 8 the year before that. I thought I was watching a show about people my own age and suddenly they were all 2 years older than me. I stopped watching it some time around then... it was becoming less funny and more relationship based by then too.
I agree w/ Sinbad and Michael, because any kind of sexism is wrong and inhuman, just as any kind of racism is wrong and inhuman. I agree there's still alot of sexism towards women, but there also seems to be alot of sexism towards men and it is especially seen in TV shows, where it is always the man who is the brainless bafoon and the woman who is the smart, intelligent, indepent one, who makes all the decisions. That being said, I was never a big fan of Topanga, because she bossed Cory around, but she also bossed everyone else around. It was almost like Cory couldn't say or do anything without fearing the wrath of Topanga. Yes, it is great to see strong female characters on TV at any age, but at the same time, I for one don't find it necessary to make her a screaming tyrant everytime her man makes a little mistake, or error in judgement. I loved Cory because he was so free spirited and did things the way he wanted to, but I felt like Topanga was always trying to change him into who she wanted him to be.
For the longest time, I thought Alyssa's absurd comments were tongue-in-cheek, as were mine. I guess I was wrong. Let's examine them, one by one.

we live in a very misogynyst world where women are only valued for our bodies and the ability to sell sex
.

Let's see, we have women doctors, lawyers, and CEOs. A woman was almost the nominee for President; one might become Vice President. Today, more women than men attend and graduate from college in the U.S. Ms. Wright's comments are a slap in the face to every woman who has achieved something thanks to brains and grit.

"boy meets world" was a very sexist and misogynyst show

"Boy Meets World" had no more to do with misogyny than "Facts of Life" had to do with misandry. Both shows purported to show the world as it unfolded for its main characters. Cory's mom on BMW was always a positive role model and generally a voice of reason.

i was meerly stating that to see a strong woman chatacter like topanga not taking any crap from her boyfriend, or any man for that matter, is very empowering

No, not really, because earlier you said:

i thought it was great that corey started out this free spirited guy and topanga chopped off his winds and made him her b*%#$! girlz rule and boyz drool!

It sure sounds like you may have anger issues, dear. I would strongly consider counseling.
excuse me, michael, but i think you're missing the whole point here! we live in a very misogynyst world where women are only valued for our bodies and the ability to sell sex and men are able to do whatever they want! i was meerly stating that to see a strong woman chatacter like topanga not taking any crap from her boyfriend, or any man for that matter, is very empowering, especially for young girls coming up in the world. "boy meets world" was a very sexist and misogynyst show to begin with, until topanga grew up and all the women characters stepped out from the backround and into the forefront to show their men who was really in charge. we need to see more teen girls who are in control and who are strong and independent rather than all the skinny airhead barbie dolls we're being bombarded with now on "gossip girl" and "one tree hill"!
alyssa wright
You to are being very sexist toward men. Why can't it be equally? Simplely because people won't let it be. In the case of straw feminists it's "women should control men." and for Machoist Jerks it's "Women are men's playthings.
I couldn't care what a women looks like (I always thought Topanga was a fairly attractive girl, even when she gained weight). I just find it sick that on TV they depict it as either The Man is better or the Women is better. Why can't they make choices together and be reasonable? It hurts me when people like you alyssa wright say "if women allow men to think for themselve men become jerks and blah blah blah" that's sexist and twisted logic. That same logic has been used time and time again be racists, sexists, and many others to justify thing that a frankly unjustifible in anyother way. Yes it's true that there was time when women where treated with disrespect dispite how hard they tried to gain it, but that doesn't mean every man was behind this. If you look back to then you'll find quite a few women where against it, and quite a few men where for it. The world is grey, it isn't man vs women and that every women is right and every man is wrong. Thinking that way makes you no better then the men who treated (and in some case still do) women like that. Just because your a women doesn't give you the right to be sexist. Just because I'm a man doesn't give me the right to be sexist either. The true feminists of the past wanted equal rights not a nation of women who are no better then the men from the past. It's true their are men out there who would gladly take advange of a women without regret, but there are just as many women willing to do the same thing, and based on your comment it's basicly "It's alright to be a sexist control freak as long as your a women" sound twisted to me. You are no better then the men who seek to control women. At least that is my opinion.
I understand that it important to have a strong role model, but think about it, isn't there a diffrence between strong and negitive. I think a strong rolemodle would be one that nurtures intellegnce and reasoning, showing the violence and screaming are last resorts and often unproductive, working as one without concern for gender is more impressive then spending your every moment trying to make the women the boss and the man the wimp. If you think about it, that hurts the whole purpase of being a good rolemodle if the only way she can be one is by being downright cruel. I think there should be more positive rolemodels for guys and girls.
While she was cute, there was no problem with Cory putting up with her nasty attitude; most guy get that. However, once she blimped up, Cory should have shipped her over to the "Facts of Life" to hang with the other tubs. Then he & Shawn could have scored some fine Philly babes (of which there are many).
sinbad there's really no call to make such a comment about a woman's body like that. yeah she put on weight but who cares? i thought topanga was a great female character and taught girls how to treat their guys, because as soon as a woman lets her man think for himself, he is then allowed to walk all over her. i thought it was great that corey started out this free spirited guy and topanga chopped off his winds and made him her b*%#$! girlz rule and boyz drool!
Carrie is correct--Topanga DID have great control over Cory. Too bad she didn't have the same level of control over her appetite....
Michael does have a point....however.....I grew up believing that is should always be the woman who has the upper hand in the relationship. Only because for centuries, women have had no say and often just had to sit and smile while the man made all the important decisions. This was especially seen on TV shows like "Leave it to Beaver". True, Topanga was bossy and while she was free to see other guys behind Cory's back and she was free to hang out with her friends independent from Cory, while she would chop him down for even saying "hi" to another female, and she would give him a curfew whenever he'd hang with Shawn, I also think Topanga was a great female character, because for us women, it is always empowering to see a woman in control of her man.
