Okay, I have to say that I think people are way too harsh on Bonnie Franklin unless they are just focusing on the first and maybe second season. Franklin had done a lot of theatre before this ODAAT break and was acting like she was on a stage. She did learn though and she got a lot better. The show was on for 9 seasons, it's totally unfair to judge her on the first two.
One tidbit for the record, Marvin Minoff, Bonnie's husband of almost thirty years now, was never a producer of One Day AT A Time. They met because they were set up on a date by a mutual friend who was the partner of Valerie's manager.
Bonnie does still work but it's generally stage and for the record, she was one of the best tap dancers around. In fact, she was probably the best female tap dancer around for a long time. Her stage experience in general is pretty impressive. She even had a tony nomination for Applause when it was on Broadway with Lauren Bacall.
Valerie Bertinell, IMO, was the person on ODAAT with the least talent. She also had the least professional experience. Over time she learned comic timing but that's it. Mackenzie had a lot of talent but the drugs really messed her up. Too bad. She just got busted again recently. Her drug problem and Pat Harrington's slapstick was the downfall of the show not Bonnie Franklin.
People really do have to keep in mine the style of acting from that time period when they judge. Think about George Jefferson (another coke head).
I think what's most important about ODAAT is that it was the first show on TV, ever, that had a divorced Mom as s central character. Kids all over the country watched this show as they dealt with their parents' divorces and that mattered.

In the 1st3 seasons they made it look like Julie more pretty then Barbar and cooler. barbra aged very classy young women
To the previous post, I assume your comments are sarcastic because there ARE women who will destroy their families simply because they are not "fulfilled". Just go hang out at the family courts for a few days and see how many women are doing just that!
The adults in this show made it jump the shark! I was a teenager during the show's original run and loved Julie and Barbara, especially Julie. But Ann ... come on! Mothers do not break up their marriages and screw up their children's lives just because they're bored or unfulfilled. They just don't - not in the 70's and not today! The character did not ring true for me and I was glad my mom was not like her!
