I think the show jumped only in the last season with the baby and how they ignored the apocalypse storyline until the end. It would have been a great last season had they known beforehand it was ending. I think future Johnny should've came back and talked Johnny into killing Stillson...and he should've done it, like in the book. THAT would've been great. Oh well, the cancellation of this show is another reason I'm not watching TV anymore.
When the Stillson story was resolved, the show was over. I guess the fifth season -- with its death of Walt, second replacement of JJ, blatant product placement ("One swipe and I'm done!"), and totally boring episodic visions of the week -- was the jump.
Killing off Walt. I LOVED the interplay between Johnny, Sarah and Walt; but I especially loved the interplay between Johnny and Walt, they had very good chemistry together, and the intensity of all the 'things left unsaid' between them because of their love for Sarah and their love for JJ, wow.
In "The Dead Zone" the stories episodic. Pretty much everything was wrapped up by the end of the show except the main story arc, the apocalypse. Once that storyline was resolved, in a particularly unsatisfying manner by the death of Malcomb Janus (a shadowy Stillson associate) but not Greg Stillson himself, the "story" was over, and the show lost its appeal. I'm not sure if this was intentional misdirection by the Pillar brothers or a mistake that they tried to correct by reviving the storyline at the end of the last season. In either case, this was the beginning of the end.
I think I stopped watching sometime after the whole Johnny from the Future stuff was going on. It made sense I guess, but they used it too much and the show was just moving too slowly.

I agree with mjm that the show should've resolved the apocolypse early on and done something new after that. I hate to see a show run itself so thin so fast. I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons.
I liked this show a lot. But I can understand why the show was canceled (even though I still wish it was on). TV shows have storyline which arc over many episodes, and in some cases, seasons. Here lies "The Dead Zone's" fatal flaw. The apocalypse. The Dead Zone was on for 6 seasons, yet at the end of season 6, the overarching storyline was still the same unsolved problem of Season 1. When is John Smith going to fix the Apocalypse?! At the end of Season 5 (or was it the middle of season 6, I don't remember), I thought that the apocalypse was finally done with. And when it came back at the end of season 6, all I could think of was, not the apocalypse! What I'm trying to say is the show moved too slowly. The TV show should have moved on from the plot of the Dead Zone book, and started something new, that all fans, who hadn't read the book, or seen the movie, would have enjoyed.

Unfortunately, it seemed that the show was finally starting to pick up the pace with the season (now series) finale. It's a shame the writers couldn't tie everything up. The show also suffered from the loss of John Smiths friend Bruce, and the loss of the Sheriff. Not many shows can survive the loss of two main characters, and this one didn't. It faced, quite ironically, its own apocalypse.
I thought I had heard somewhere that this show along with The 4400, have now been canceled and are not coming back. I really did like The Dead Zone. However, it did seem over that last season or so as if they did stretch it out a bit. For me the jumping point would have been the space shuttle episode. It would really have been nice if they could have finished this show up with a two hour finally, but I guess that isn't going to happen.
That is the problem I have with serials. As long as things are going great in terms of ratings and costs aren't too high, the shows can go on forever. However, once things start to turn sour, the shows IMO usually end up canceled before the writers can wrap everything up and write a proper ending to the show.
watched the show in 02,0 3 and 04 and liked it alot. in 05 it was not shown on our cable on usa network for some reason. found it again in 06, watched a few eps....and just did not care anymore what happened. havent watched it since and have not missed it one bit.
The episode "EXILE" which was set in Indiana was the episode that most resembled the previous 3 seasons.

The season finale did show the real cruel Stilson behind the happy mask.

The 6th season seems like the producers had the first 2 and last 2 episodes already written, but had a hard time figuring out how to bridge them.

What did not make sense is how it was determined to poison Herb Smith on the exact day that Johnny Smith would discover his father.

Will the producers please work at ending the series in 7th season. Make the final episdodes worth watching.
What really gets me is the dynamic change in relationship they have made with Johnny and JJ. JJ is Johnny's REAL son and they have all but remade that show fact. they write lines for Sarah like, "You're not JJ's father Johnny!!" Dude, what the heck? that last episode Sarah told JJ, "Johnny will always be a part of your life." Since his step father died Sarah should be pointing JJ towards his biological father and not whoring around with Bill Clinton's deputy. Sarah 'loved' Johnny so much that she did him in an early season, and now she's worried about doing the right thing? Someone needs to say it, this show needs to be cancelled NOW! It's already jumped the Abraham Lincoln, let alone the shark.
Hey Maine, I'm a gurl fan and I sure don't think of the new sheriff as "a love interest for Johnny". None of the other women I know who watch the show do. The "actress" is terrible and her character is annoying. Johnny belongs with Sarah or no one. I don't object to having a female sheriff, in fact it could add some layers to the show and the characters' interactions, but couldn't they at least find someone who could act to play her?
I seriously thought the show was on the verge of jumpig this season, but i must say last weeks really felt like the show started going back to its roots. I think people confuse a growing show with jumping. Sometimes the plot needs to change some to keep the drama going. Either way I think the show is back on track and it was great bringin walt back to wrap up the season
I agree with Scott...smacks more of a soap opera. 10% action...90% soap.

Sunday night has my vote for Worst Episode Ever. I could hardly sit through it and was glad when it was finally over with.

What is happening with USA?? 4400, Psych, Burn Notice...all very good but they managed to wax the skis up for Dead Zone.
Great show... but having Sarah have romantic feelings for Stillson? Why kill off walt to have Johnny and Srah get together then throw in that crap. And either the new sheriff likes Johnny or she doesn't, but make a decision. They just lost a loyal viewer because I don't like soaps... or incredibly stupid plot twists. (Or should I say "twits?"
They killed Walt!!? What a bloody stupid move. Worse, they've introduced a female head cop. Ooh a love interest for John, squeals all the gurl fans. Blech! I loved this show, and now I have no, nil, nadda, interest in the thing. Walt and John had great chemistry. My favorite show has just become typical clone garbage.
