Nick Doug at its best was art, and at its worst--the absolute floor--was "merely" solid children's entertainment. It seems like that became the absolute ceiling after the switch.
I never forced myself to sit through much of Disney's Doug, but somehow, it hurts just knowing it exists. Life itself risks jumping the shark right around the age of ABC Doug, and in aging him in the process of wrecking his show, it almost feels as though Disney wrecked his life.
A few words on deus ex machina (mentioned a while back), while I'm here: while it can't be denied that many of Doug's crises had tidy resolutions, and some episodes may be less defensible than others, the fact that Doug had gotten worked up over nothing was often sort of the point. That was the moral--a lot of the anxiety you put yourself through is unnecessary.

Miss Nannette thinks that Caillou is much better than this show. But as far as valuable children's programming goes, Dora the Explorer is still tops in Miss Nannette book!
I remember this show, even though I was 4 or 5 when this show came on Nick. I miss this show so much! I wish Nick would bring this back!
ZOMG! This was the first Nickoon ever. I loved the theme song becuase it is so simple and easy to remember. Nick made the bigest mistake by giving this show to disney so they could screw it up. Nick ws great back then I remember when TV was fun to watch. Saturday cartoons were the best.
This was a very odd little cartoon. It was nothing big, just a quiet show that was sometimes funny and sometimes a bit sad. Never the greatest show on TV, but it was fairly well done. It was nice.
What killed it for me was the episode when Doug and Patty did it in the shed out back. The moans coming from the other side of that door said everything and we knew that the kids wouldn't be the same anymore. Especially Patty...

I never really liked the show "Doug" at least not the first season. The animation was very crude and I always found Doug to be sort of predictable and annoying.
I think it might have improved when it switched to ABC because the characters looked better and so did the episode summaries. But I think it was the movie that really killed it, once Doug and Patty became a couple it was like..."okay, that's it? Thank you."

Ah the memories, I loved this show. I didn't watch it when it first came out, I saw weekday reruns on YTV.Doug was never cool, he was just a shy, decent, quirky guy with a big imagination. He had a quiet wisdom, yet still went through all the heartbrake of late childhood/early puberty. He wasn't brash, and often felt confused, but pulled through on sheer pluck.
That is what made Doug special.

I would like to say how much of a weenie Doug was, but I guess he was a good cartoon role model for boys in that he treated others as he would like to be treated. He wasn't hung up on conformity, either. One episode that really stuck in my mind was the one where he dreaded going to Patti's party for the longest time, all because he thought she was serious about liver and onions being served. And then he attempted to learn to like it, in preparation! Roger provided most of the cartoon's excitement. But Doug never should have been given that new megaweenie voice!
The show jumped when it switched from Nick to ABC. One thing I liked about the old Nick version is that each episode usually consisted of two 15 stories rather than just one half hour story. Not that many programs do that anymore and I miss it now.
No need to e-mail you, Christine
, and anyway, you didn't give out your e-mail address, but it's right here on the site, Funnie [or some would say about the inevitable ABC with the "different voice",, "Doug Fungie", as in fungus].[Most likely the different voice was due to being broadcast and even maybe due to being made by Disney---Nick still showed the original.]
Roger being a bully and then being rich? Well, it was the next step (though next stop Beverly Hills, so our heroes will say Bye bye Rogers, a new villian is needed!) And regarding morality rather than p;olitcs...well....morialty plays into politcs and politics (note singular noun!) plays into morality in everything all the time, baby!
