This was a great show for awhile. Is it one of the best of all times? It's right up there with many others. OZ was the first show of this type and it was great for the first few seasons as well.
However, they both ran out of steam in the end. I don't really blame anyone but HBO, they pressured and pressured David Chase to stretch it far, far too long. To me, when Adrianna died the show died along with it. Rather, let me say when Adrianna got murdered the show got murdered.
Why in the hell they did the stupid Vito storyline is beyond my imagination. Did they get letters from viewers stating a fascination with this guy? Was he a main character that somehow I overlooked? Hell no, it's all they could come up with.
That last season? It had one or two promising scenes but man, it went to the dumpster FAST and HARD. In the end, I was so disappointed I decided to boycott the last few episodes, I've only heard or read about what happened. I think the final scene is poetic justice about what happened to the show. They didn't know how to end it so they just ended it...to a lame 80
s song because that don't make sense either.
Don't worry, OZ finished badly as well, I remember the good times and I forgive all for the endings to these fine shows.
Oh, one more thing. Make a Sopranos movie with all the main characters back in it like nothing ever happened. Bring back Christopher, Adrianna, Big *****, and all the rest. People would love to see a long Sopranos movie ala Godfather and it would make a ton of money in theater receipts, DVD and Blu-Ray sales. Maybe even an Oscar!

The series survived because everyone was waiting for it to return to the form it had in the frst 2 seasons. Unfortunately it never did. The shows got worse as the seasons went on, and reached it's worst with the "Vito's a fag" storyline and the horrible ending.
As for david chase (and gandolfini, for that matter) he is a bitter, sour man who resents the only thing that has brought professional success to him (I dont think those Rockford Files episodes count). He never cared about the fans of the show and even said that the fans "sickened" him because they "turned" on Tony and wanted to see him killed after cheering him on for years.

When Christopher and Carmine Jr. became movie producers and went to L.A. to meet Ben Kingsley. Totally ridiculous. Come to think of it, I think Christopher was trying to do a movie with Jon Favreau in the second season. The Ben Kingsley stuff pushed it over the edge.
People who defend this show to the end need there head examined. David Chase turned a Picasso into my 1st graders art project. This show got worse as it went on. The last 2 seasons where dreadful, the end was the worst ever.I guess I'm to small minded to appreciate the supposed intricate plot lines that all you soprano apologists post about. How anybody can proclaim to know what happened in that last episode is nonsense, nobody knows, not even David Chase, he didnt know how to end it so he gave us that garbage. I'll never watch an episode of this show again, basically made me waste 10 years of my life for nothing. They should return all there emmys.....
I chose never jumped. That is due to the sheer brilliance of the show that no misstep could take it down. There are some low lights however...... For me the show was never the same after they killed off Adrianna. The feel was never the same. The fed stuff was great and her scenes with Christapha were classic. Her absence left a hole that was never filled.
Tony getting shot and the Kevin Finnerty stuff was awful. That is the closest it came to jumping.

My biggest gripe was the length between seasons. It was absurd and ruined the flow of the show.

The Third season is probably the best of the series. I used to like the first season the most but I just finished watching the third season all over again and realized how great it actually was. The second season was overrated but still not bad. From the fourth season on the show started to jts. Season four had a few fine moments but seemed way too erratic. Season five was kind of boring. Steve Buscemi has no business playing a mobster on tv. The Adrianna stuff did keep things interesting though.
Season six was a total trainwreck. Most people think the Vito storyline was the problem but at least it was a storyline. Afterwards it was all crap from there. Who cares about Carmela's trip to Paris, or Artie's credit card problem, or Chris' horror movie, or Tony's birthday celebration at Janice's beach house. And the list goes on and on. Too much nonsense taking up too much time. But I had no complaints about the final scene though. It did take me a over a to come up with a theory of my own on what may have happened. When Feurio started in with that "emotional friend" relationship with Carmela. First 2 seasons were such great entertainment. After that, a few bumps of brilliance, but mostly "meh".
Here is the thing with Sopranos- if you parse it out season to season, the weaknesses become evident- Season 4, ok, Vito gay storyline, pointless, dream sequences, pretty awful.
But if you take it as a whole- and I insist you watch it now, after the show has concluded- you notice the show really delved into so many complicated plotlines and flowed so well from one season to the next, that almost no show can compare.

Great show..especially first three seasons..my best moments are: Big *****'s final boat ride, Adriannas first arrest with the Feds (great crying scene), all the duck scenes, and Sylvio..all the time.

However, seasons five and six pretty much blow, and if I have to pick one element that caused this show to jump the shark, it's Vito's storyline. The subject matter of homosexuality was crudely rendered (especially in that gay bar populated with Village People caricatures) and felt like a desperate attempt to be edgy (ooh, a gay mobster!) and to emulate a show that dealt with it more deftly (Six Feet Under). I was also annoyed that the show had an array of great characters that had been developed for years and then I had to waste time with this half-baked Vito character. I'm hearing about Johnnycakes for an hour and the show's greatest character (Christopher) doesn't make a single appearance onscreen!?! Lame! There goes the shark.
I was also bummed that Steve Buscemi was underutilized as an actor (a masseuse!?!) in Season Five.

2.phil rescued the last two seasons by bringing a wartime edge that the show desperately needed.
3.the russian caper in season 3 left me salivating for his return.
