Terrible show!!
As for the Munsters vs. the Addams Family debate, I preferred the Addams
Family as a child, and I still do. The Munsters were silly and cartoonish, and there was no way someone who looked like Herman Munster
or Grandpa would be allowed to walk around in polite society. They'd both probably be committed! The Addams family just seemed eccentric and,as another poster mentioned, goth. Even Lurch looked more normal than Herman Munster. I loved the way Gomez adored Morticia; it was groundbreaking in a way, showing this married couple who was hot for each other. Morticia is why I always wanted long straight black hair; I bet she influenced a lot of serious, moody girls with her style and deadpan attitude.
I don't understand why there are choices listed such as "The Movie" and "The New Addams Family." Those both came out AFTER the original show was long gone... how could the show jump the shark once it's gone out of production? Silly. Whether you like or hate those other productions, they have absolutely no bearing on the original show's jump status.

IMHO, The Addams Family never jumped -- I think if it had stayed on the air longer, there would have been a pretty great chance of it jumping within a season or two, just because there's no way the writing could stay up to snuff much longer than it did. As it was, sometimes it was only the outstanding acting that kept the show from jumping.

As a completely off-topic comment, I find it highly amusing that there are some people on this site that try to turn everything into a political statement. That says a lot about the poor condition of education in this country today.
I always liked this show. I still see it here and there on TVLand. I have seen the episodes many times.

The only issue I have is the laugh track. It is used way too much. Spend a few minutes and listen for how frequent it is. They also laugh at things that are not really funny at all.

Uncle Fester was the best.
Aw, this show wasn't on long enough to jump. Just two seasons, and during the same two seasons as the Munster's. That's tough. The Munster's had the better car, but, the Addams' had more money. And the fire between Gomez and Morticia--well, Gomez was totally my role model! Totally never jumped.
I'll take the old sixties series anytime. In the movies they are made out to be evil, whereas in the series they were creepy and all, but wouldnt have hurt anybody for the world.
I never really liked it either. Always thought the Munsters were much funnier. And scoping out Marilyn didn't hurt either. To each his own.
You know, I just never liked it. I've tried to like it, and I can give it a little chuckle every now and then, but that is it. The movies were much better.
When Wednesday became the focus of EVERY episode. Terrible.

p.s.: Thing is #1!!!
It's rare (or unheard of really) when a great and creative show like the Addams Family is also made into a great and creative movie.
Carolyn Jones and John Astin were perfectly cast as Morticia and Gomez, as were Anjelica Houston and Raul Julia in the movie versions. The supporting players were well-cast as well.
Never, ever jumped!
Never jumped. But the movies were even better!
the addams family was my favorit tv show even though i was 13years old at that time all so did not care about the monsters to me its just a poser trying to make some thing out of them selfs
yes i agree i love Carolyn jones she is soooooooooooo beautiful.i want to lose weight so i can look just like her i've already got the hair...i want my own gomez!!!

as her tombstone reads:
"she brought joy to this world"

her memory lives on

God Bless

And bits and pieces of inspiration from ABC's "The Addams Family"were also evident in OTHER series as well-In "Gilligan's Island"the color episode "Not Guilty",(watch the episode and you'll know what I'm talking about),in the "F Troop" episode "The Great Troop Robbery",in the scene when trooper Dobbs is tied up while being interrogated, says to Capt.Parmenter who objects,"Oh,that's okay,Captain. In fact,I even volunteered for it." in a"Green Acres"episode from the last two seasons,Mr.Haney says to Lisa,"Gosh,Oh,Hemlock,Mrs.Douglas.You sure look pretty this morning." ,in an episode of "The Doris Day Show","How Can I Ignore the Man Next Door?",Myrna Gibbon (Rose Marie)suggests using Hemlock(poison) to get rid of Jarvis, and on "Mama's Family",when the Harper's have to babysit Rev.Meacham's bratty son.(Especially watch the scene where Mama tells bratty little Eugene her twisted bedtime story,(like Morticia's twisted tales in the very good second season episode when writes a book)The person who said it was great and daring for the time(mid 1960's)wasn't kidding. It was also WAY ahead of its time, and although it came close a few times,NEVER JUMPED THE SHARK.
In the two seasons it was on ABC,"The Addams Family"NEVER JUMPED,although it came close sometimes ,but,as I said, thanks to good,(sometimes bizarre)funny plots, and good acting, never did.But I cannot put my finger on it,but something seemed different about the second season (1965-1966)episodes.And a couple of questions::Did Charles Addams' original comics that appeared in The New Yorker ,and according to a book I have called "Total Television"had characters that had no names, include characters Cousin Itt (a more-than-welcome addition, that made the series even more bizarre),or Ophelia(so-so)?And a final question:To those who saw the movies, were characters Cousin Itt and Ophelia included or were they just on the TV series? And to the poster below, who mentioned "F Troop",remember in the very good first season episode where Lurch, the butler learns to dance, his instructor was a woman named "Miss O'Rourke".Coincidence, huh?
