Within the context of the show itself, it never jumped. Affection for the characters and cast really prevents me from harboring anything but admiration and fanboy crazyness for this show. However, taking a step back, it was rather a missed chance. There were many things wrong but one thing I've always thought was that the show's cast was far too old. Now wait! Don't hit me! what I mean is that lots of comedy, and even Croft comedy is pratfall and slapstick. There was no one in the cast to do it! Well, Mavis, but Croft doesn't seem to think that young women can be funny. One small element I think that would have improved the show immensely was the recasting of Mavis' father. Had they made him Mavis' brother instead of her father, there would have been much more story chances for the writers. (My dream casting is Daniel Hill of Waiting for God fame). He could have been someone to fall down the stairs carrying something for Captain Peacock or get hit by a runaway cow or any number of other bizzare pratfalls that the older cast members could never be asked to do. In the end though, I loved the show. I feel it would be a betrayal on a familial level for me to say anything against the wonderful characters and actors of Are You Being Served? fame!
I thought it was quite funny, and was just happy having most of the old gang back again. I wish they had made more episodes.
This show reminds me of the time I ate liver for dinner and it tasted so bad that I nearly threw up. I then put the leftovers in the fridge, where it sat for more than a month. Stupidly, I took the moldy mass out of the fridge, re-heated it, and ate it. Six months later, I was still in intensive care.

How could they take a terrible show like 'Are You Being Served' and do a SECOND series?!?! I wonder how many people ended up in intensive care as a result.
In the time we are living and the problems in this world this show was the best escape. To watch a group of people work together for each other is somethimg I think our whole culture needs to learn. It had to be the best show ever on tv
I own the entire AYBS franchise on dvd. The sequel some people say was stupid. I thought it was just as good as the original. Sad they did not make anymore. And I agree with the guest appearances. It would have been nice for the bit players from the original to pop in their hotel for a visit. I would give this show 5 stars. Awesome show.
I totally disagree that "are you being served again" didn't work! I think it is funny! When they were in the store it got a bit boring after awhile just because alot of the jokes were the same. But being in a different environment was great, and it had alot more possibilities with guest appearances etc. To say that it was ridiculous that these people would go into business together is not ridiculous at all, concidering thats where their retirement money was invested. I think it was great and I wished they would have made more. By the way if you listen to the writers of both these programs they say Mr Humphries wasn't gay, he was just a mothers boy. So they wanted him to have a girlfriend in the second series!!
This show was cancelled just as it was getting good. The first season seemed to me a bit shakey. But in the second it seemed to hit it's stride. The romantic sub-plot with Mavis & Mr. Humphries was hilarious mainly because it was so inconceivable & ridiculous. And Mr. Moulterd stole the show.
The local PBS (KRWG) only shows three at most British comedies, anymore. So reading about Are You Being Served and Again, was such a joy. Guess I'll have to get the tapes or discs since the locals in New Mexico or at least PBS has moved on to "better" things. I think not. Robert in New Mexico.
This show jumped the shark when they implied that Mr. Humphrey's (who was delicately known as being gay) was becoming part of a relationship with Mavis. I heard that the plot line actually called for them to end up married! This would be a huge insult to the gay audience, since life is hard enough (especially in the USA) for gay folks, without affirming the tired old cliche that the way to"Heal" a gay man (even in his late 50's) is to have some pretty young woman show a serious interest in him. Puleeeeze! I was so pleased when this drivel was put to death quickly.
This show never jumped....at all. What it gave is was more comedy from the BBC, who does it like no one else in the World! Viewers were disappointed to see the cast of A.Y.B.S older and not in the costumes of Grace Department Store...yet, if you actually Watch all 12 episodes...you will be laughing...I wish they would have made more...to see them all again together...What a Treat...that will not Ever be repeated...Bravo for all you gave us and continue to do so.
The original cast plus Mavis and Mr Multerd were fantastic additions. Miss Lovelace was good for Capt Peacock but little else. These episodes of AYBS Again were fantastic and I love watching them in repeats as much as the original AYBS. They just worked so well together even if they were older; it happens to the best of us,eh!
For me, at least, this show, even after A.Y.B.S (in the dept. store setting), never really jumped. "Again" was just a different setting which was actually a little refreshing and I enjoyed the addition of the Multerds. I am a great fan of the British comedies and a big thank you to PBS for showing them.
With the word "again" in the title, that tells you something off the bat. The cast was so old and tired looking, but the thought of them running an in? Totally ridiculous. The show in the store showed the true characters, and their different classes, this was just sad.
Are You Being Served got banal quite quickly and then went on for too long, so the revival (Grace and Flavour, not Are You Being Served Again) was a bad idea. One of my friends said that Are You Being Served was funny because that was the comedy of the time, but it wasn't the right comedy for the nineties.
I know it wasn't as funny as the original, but I watched because I could never get enough of the delicious Fleur Bennett as Mavis Moulterd. God, she was lovely.
